Fire Island, New York — Erosion Control

Over the last decade, Fire Island, in Suffolk County, New York, has experienced increasingly dangerous shoreline erosion.

TrapBags were originally installed over a decade ago to help combat the erosion—over the years, the bags have endured many powerful storms and rising water levels. As the erosion has grown more extreme as the years have passed, the county decided to install another set of TrapBags in March of 2024. The TrapBags will mitigate the erosion as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers work toward re-nourishing the sand.
